CWEIC boss Marland: AfCFTA is a game changer for Africa

The AfCFTA is a high ambition trade agreement, with a comprehensive scope that includes critical areas of Africa’s economy, such as digital trade and investment protection, amongst other areas

Lord Marland, the Chairman of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC), has described the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a game changer that will transform the continent.

The AfCFTA is a high ambition trade agreement, which is aimed at free trade among Africa’s 55 countries and nearly 1.4 billion, allowing, ultimately for the free movement of people, goods and services among member states.

Appearing on the Asaase Breakfast Show (ABS) on Monday (6 February), Lord Marland said, CWEIC will support the AfCFTA secretariat to promote the initiative. 21 Commonwealth members are also members of AfCFTA.

“The AfCFTA is exactly what is needed and will be hugely beneficial to the continent’s development… being able to trade among each other will be a game changer and the Commonwealth recognises this,” he said.

“Our organisation survives on free trade and we’ll be working with the African free trade group to promote it,” Marland said. “Free trade has demonstrated over time that it has helped countries out of poverty, so it’s good for countries.”
