Black Starlets stage comeback to thrash Kazakhstan 5-1

This emphatic victory marks Ghana's second consecutive win in the tournament, having previously defeated Serbia by the same scoreline

Ghana’s U-17 national men’s football team, the Black Starlets, displayed remarkable resilience to overturn a one-goal deficit and secure a resounding 5-1 victory over Kazakhstan in the UEFA U-16 four-nation tournament on Sunday (28 March).

The young Ghanaians found themselves behind early on after FC Zhetysu Taldykorgan’s Erbol Kurmanakhan put Kazakhstan ahead in the 21st minute. However, the Black Starlets refused to be disheartened. Captain Benjamin Tsevanyo led by example, equalising for Ghana just before halftime (42nd minute).

The momentum shifted firmly in Ghana’s favour after the equaliser. Joseph Narbi emerged as the star of the show, netting a quickfire brace in the closing minutes of the first half (44th and 45th minutes) to take Ghana into a commanding 3-1 lead.

Abdulai Nortey further extended Ghana’s advantage with a clinical finish in the 59th minute, before Benjamin Hanson added the finishing touch with Ghana’s fifth goal late on. This emphatic victory marks Ghana’s second consecutive win in the tournament, having previously defeated Serbia by the same scoreline.

The UEFA U-16 four-nation tournament provides a valuable platform for young footballers to gain international experience.

For the Black Starlets, this competition serves as crucial preparation ahead of hosting the WAFU Zone B U-17 Championship on 15 May, where they will be aiming to claim regional glory and a spot in the TotalEnergies U-17 Africa Cup of Nations.
