Not all animals are edible, says Forestry Commission

The Forestry Commission has advised Ghanaians to desist from the habit of seeing all animals as edible meat as the world commemorates International Day for Biological Diversity.

The United Nations (UN) International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) is commemorated annually on 22 May to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.

Appearing on the Asaase Breakfast Show, an official of the Forestry Commission, Richard Gyimah, described the phenomenon as disturbing, adding that the government must create alternative livelihood for persons who habitually engage in such practice.

“Let’s create an understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues, so that people will understand that we need to look around ourselves,” he said.

“The various plants and animals that we see, we don’t need to be killing, especially the animals for meat requirement, anything that comes, people want to kill, you go to other countries, and it is not like that.”

“Just that we have to drum home the message of biodiversity, if it’s a matter of creating alternative livelihoods  and also getting them into gainful employment to move away from this disturbing attitude, let’s do that as a nation,” Gyimah said.
