The UN Security Council blocked Palestine’s bid to become a full member of the United Nations due to a United States veto.
The draft resolution received 12 votes in favour, with Switzerland and the United Kingdom abstaining.
Palestine applied to become a full UN Member State in 2011 and obtained the status of a non-member observer State in 2012.
The representative of Algeria introduced the draft resolution, urging members to vote for the text and the sake of Palestinians.
He said that it is time for Palestine to take its rightful place among the community of nations.
The Russian Federation called on the United States to “listen to the voice of reason” and join other Council members’ efforts to establish an immediate ceasefire in Gaza after Israel’s crimes against civilians.
The representative of the United States expressed support for Palestinian statehood within a comprehensive peace agreement but voted against the draft because there was no unanimity among the Admissions Committee members on whether the applicant met the membership criteria.
The United Kingdom called for the crisis in Gaza to be fixed first and stated that removing Hamas‘s capacity to attack Israel and supporting Palestinian Government reforms are unavoidable steps on the road to peace.
The Permanent Observer for the State of Palestine, Riyad Mansour said “Our right to self-determination has never once been subject to bargaining or negotiation.”
He thanked all those who supported Palestine’s request for UN membership for understanding Palestinian pain.
Palestine accepted the two-state solution as an international vision of peace and engaged in the peace process, but questioned if Israel was a true partner for peace.
He urged those present to give Israel the time it needs to annex Palestinian land.
The representative of Israel, Ambassador Gilad Erdan, thanked the United States specifically President Joe Biden for standing up for “truth and morality in the face of hypocrisy and politics” and said the draft resolution was destructive because it rewarded Palestinian terror and made peace almost impossible.
