The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UNER) has kicked out the University of Cape Coast and the Regional Maritime University to qualify for the semi-final stage of the 4th edition of the “Gas Challenge”.
The preliminary stage of the competition was held at the GNAT Hall in Accra on the 15th of November, 2023.
The theme for this year’s edition is “Embracing the Future Together: Building a Sustainable Gas Industry Through Education”.
The competition, which seeks to demystify misconceptions in the gas industry in order to bring about accurate reportage, saw competitors from the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UNER), who were nicknamed “LNG” for the purposes of the gas challenge, Regional Maritime University, who were nicknamed “ETHANE” and the University of Cape Coast, who were nicknamed “CNG”.
The UNER team came out as the winners with 63 points, followed by Regional Maritime University with 62 points and UCC with 54 points at the end of the first preliminary stage of the competition.
Aim of quiz
The CEO of the Ghana National Gas Company, Dr. Ben K D Asante, said that the quiz aimed at ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education for all.
“The Gas Challenge is also aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 4 and is committed to providing quality education and promoting life-long learning opportunities.”
“The competition encourages and continues to recognise students who wish to make an impact in the Energy sector and are also passionate about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields.
Ghana Gas is conscious of increasing female interest in the study of oil and gas-related courses and has used this platform to encourage female participation. The best female contestants are always recognized and rewarded,” Dr. Asante said.
The GNGC CEO also revealed that the company invested approximately 45% of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds in educational programs nationwide last year.
“In 2022 alone, the company invested approximately 45% of its CSR funds on various educational programs across the 16 regions of the country,” Asante added.
The GNGC is organising this year’s edition under the auspices of the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Education.
