Consumer Protection CEO urges end to overseas medical trips, pushes for functional local hospitals

Kofi Owusu Hene, popularly known as Kofi Kapito, CEO of the Consumer Protection Agency, has called for an urgent overhaul of Ghana’s healthcare system, urging that government officials, including the President, be treated within domestic hospitals rather than being flown abroad for medical care.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (17 March), Kapito criticised the ongoing practice under Agenda 111, arguing that taxpayer-funded foreign medical trips undermine confidence in local hospitals.

He announced plans to start a campaign advocating for government officials to utilise domestic medical facilities, emphasising that such measures would hold authorities accountable and improve local healthcare infrastructure.

Kapito stressed that when officials seek treatment abroad, it signals a lack of faith in the health system, which ultimately affects the average Ghanaian.

“It’s a matter of pride and accountability,” he said, calling on citizens to support the campaign to prioritise local hospitals.
