Concerned Newly Posted Teachers: GES must reinstate us or face nationwide protest

According to the convener of the Concerned Newly Posted Teachers, delays in accessing the appointment portal and validation processes led to some teachers being excluded from payroll, which the GES later used as grounds for revocation

The Convener of the Concerned Newly Posted Teachers, Daniel Anokye, has issued a passionate appeal to the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ministry of Education to reinstate over 2,600 teachers whose appointments were revoked earlier this year, despite a validation directive by the Minister of Education.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (15 April), Anokye recounted the frustration and distress experienced by affected teachers who were issued appointment letters on 8 November 2023, only to later receive notice of revocation.

“We got our appointment letters on the 8th of November, which is clearly before 7th December, the cut-off date in the Chief of Staff’s directive. We resigned from our previous jobs, paid for medicals, printed documents, submitted them to our regional offices, and assumed duty,” Anokye stated.

According to him, delays in accessing the appointment portal and validation processes led to some teachers being excluded from payroll, which the GES later used as grounds for revocation. He described the move as contradictory to the Chief of Staff’s directive that only appointments made after 7 November should be affected.

“On the 17th of February, GES released a letter stating that those not on the payroll would have their appointments revoked. But this contradicts the directive from the Chief of Staff. We had valid appointments before the deadline,” he emphasised.

Following public outcry, the Minister of Education intervened, allowing affected teachers a four-week window to undergo a validation process at regional GES offices. Anokye noted that the validation was successfully completed, but no further communication has been issued regarding reinstatement.

“It’s been over a month since we completed validation and we’ve heard nothing. We are in financial and emotional distress. We just want to hear from GES and know where we stand,” he said.

Anokye warned that if no official response is given by the end of the week, the group will organise a peaceful nationwide protest at the GES headquarters and the Ministry of Education.

“If by next week we don’t hear from them, we have no option but to embark on a peaceful demonstration. We will come from all regions to demand a clear communique about our reinstatement,” he declared.

He added that despite engaging with teacher unions including NAGRAT, GNAT, TEWU, and CCT, and multiple visits to the Ministry of Education and GES headquarters, they are yet to receive any concrete feedback.

“We’re not asking for much. Just a clear message that those validated will be reinstated and those whose letters are still with the regional offices can proceed. This silence is unbearable,” Anokye stressed.

The affected teachers, many of whom had to relocate and take loans for accommodation, say they are suffering deep psychological and financial strain as a result of the situation.
