Cole Palmer breaks Yaya Touré’s penalty record

Palmer

Cole Palmer, Chelsea’s rising star, has etched his name into Premier League history, surpassing Manchester City legend Yaya Touré’s long-standing penalty record in a thrilling 4-3 comeback victory over Tottenham on Sunday (9 December).

Touré’s impeccable run of 11 consecutive Premier League penalties had remained unmatched—until now.

Palmer’s composed execution of two second-half spot-kicks not only levelled the record but elevated it to an unprecedented 12 successful penalties without a miss.

The 22-year-old sealed his place in history with flair, delivering a cheeky ‘Panenka’ penalty in the 84th minute.

As the ball floated down the centre of the goal, Tottenham’s goalkeeper Fraser Forster could only watch helplessly.

Reflecting on his bold choice, Palmer said, “When I put the ball down and stepped back, I knew what I was going to do.”

“I thought it was late in the game and it was a bit crazy, so I just went for it.”

Since joining Chelsea from Manchester City in 2023, Palmer’s rise has been meteoric.

With 50 goal involvements (33 goals and 17 assists) in just 48 league games, the Englishman has become a linchpin in Chelsea’s resurgence, propelling them to second place in the Premier League table.

Sunday’s match against Tottenham was a testament to Palmer’s all-round brilliance.

In addition to his record-breaking penalties, he played a pivotal role in setting up one of Chelsea’s goals, showcasing his creativity and composure under pressure.

Palmer’s incredible form continues to draw comparisons with the world’s best, as he solidifies his reputation as one of the most exciting young talents in football.
