Ranking Member for Food and Agriculture Committee, Isaac Opoku has announced that Cocoa Farmers in Sefwi will engage in demonstration, for the first time in Ghana’s history.
Speaking on the Big Bulletin on 9 February 2026, Ampofo made it known that Ghanaian Cocoa Farmers who have never demonstrated will do so, on 24 February 2026.
This comes after Cocoa Farmers threatened to sell their farms to galamseyers on January 08, 2026.
Cocoa beans that were harvested in November 2025, have not been paid for, despite assurances from government that the Farmers will be paid.
According to the Ranking Member, Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) is owing the Licensed Buying Companies (LBCs) Ghc 11 billion, yet is releasing Ghc 620 million, which is less than 6% of the owed amount.
“If you owe the LBCs Ghc 11 billion, and you are releasing just Ghc 620 million, less than 6% of what you owe; what can that do?” Ampofo questioned.
In a report by Agnes Fynn of Asaase Radio, the Ranking Member for the Food and Agriculture Committee also said the Farmers had a meeting with COCOBOD management, but the meeting did not yield any results.
“We had a meeting with COCOBOD Management, headed by the Chief Executive. We asked him what the takeaway of the meeting was, and he wasn’t forthcoming at all, so the fear is that the Farmers do not know when they will be fully paid. It is an unfortunate situation”.
He then urged Cocoa Farmers not to sell their farms to galamseyers since that would only lead to loss rather than gain.
“If they sell their Cocoa farms today, they will get something for just today, but tomorrow, there’ll be nothing to hang unto”, he said.
The Ranking Member also sent out a plea to government to pay the Farmers.
“We are pleading with the government, whatever it takes to pay the Cocoa Farmer, please do it. The Cocoa Farmer has never ever received 100% of the efforts, and yet their share is not being paid. This is unfair to the Cocoa Farmer”, he stated.
