Coalition of Nzema youth call for the suspension of PhuB project

The 20,000-acre project, intended to boost oil refining, petrochemicals, and storage infrastructure, has sparked concerns over land acquisition, environmental risks, and lack of community engagement.

The Coalition of Nzema youth and some environmental advocates have submitted a petition to President John Dramani Mahama urging the suspension of the Petroleum Hub Development Project in the Domunli enclave, in the Jomoro Municipality.

The 20,000-acre project, intended to boost oil refining, petrochemicals, and storage infrastructure, has sparked concerns over land acquisition, environmental risks, and lack of community engagement.

The petition highlights that affected communities were not granted Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) before the project’s approval, violating human rights frameworks.

Additionally, the compulsory land acquisition under the Land Act, 2020 (Act 1036) raises legal and constitutional concerns.

In a media engagement on Wednesday (12 February 2025), environmentalists warn that the project threatens the Domunli Lagoon’s biodiversity, impacting coconut plantations, fishing grounds, and local wildlife habitats.

Moreover, inadequate compensation packages and missing livelihood restoration plans put displaced communities at economic risk.

The coalition also questioned the credibility of project partners, including Touchstone Capital Group Holdings Ltd and UIC Energy Ghana Ltd, whose financial capacities remain uncertain.

The petitioners urge President Mahama to pause the acquisition process, assess the project’s feasibility, and investigate the legitimacy of its investors before proceeding with development.
