CLOGSAG suspends nationwide strike to allow government negotiations

The Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) has temporarily suspended its nationwide strike following an appeal from the government to provide more time for negotiations over salaries and working conditions.

In a press statement issued on 17 March, the union said its National Executive Committee (EXECO) had agreed to halt the industrial action for two weeks to create space for an amicable resolution. Members are expected to return to work by Tuesday, 24 March 2026.

“The EXECO, therefore, has suspended the nationwide strike,” the statement signed by Executive Secretary Isaac Bampoe Addo read. The union added that the government requested a 14-day window to address the concerns raised by staff regarding the salary structure and conditions of service.

CLOGSAG represents a substantial portion of Ghana’s public sector workforce, including administrative staff in ministries, departments, agencies, and local government assemblies. The strike had disrupted key services across the country, including administrative processing, local government operations, and coordination of public programmes.

Observers say the temporary suspension signals the union’s willingness to engage in dialogue while maintaining leverage through the possibility of renewed industrial action if negotiations fail.

The two-week window places pressure on the government to deliver concrete proposals addressing long-standing concerns over remuneration and working conditions.

Failure to reach an agreement could see the strike reinstated, potentially paralyzing critical public institutions and services.
