Cleaner remanded for stealing service rifle

The remand order was issued by the Wenchi Magistrate Court, presided over by His Worship Issa Abdul Wahab

A 28-year-old civilian employee of the Ghana Police Service, Joseph Adinkra, has been remanded for two weeks into police custody for stealing an AK-47 rifle, serial number AE 405323, at the Wenchi Police Station.

The remand order was issued by the Wenchi Magistrate Court, presided over by His Worship Issa Abdul Wahab.

Adinkra, who works as a cleaner at the Wenchi Police Station and resides in Akrobi, a suburb of Wenchi in the Bono Region, is accused of stealing the weapon, along with a 30-round SMG magazine.

The incident took place on 3 January 2025, during the early hours of the morning.

According to Prosecutor Detective Inspector John Agyare, the complainant in the case is Chief Inspector Seth Agyei, the station officer of the Wenchi Police Station. The case involves Adinkra, a civilian employee at the station.

At around 5:20 am on 3 January 2025, one of the police officers who had been on night patrol returned the AK-47 rifle to the charge office.

The weapon was duly logged by the officers on duty and placed under the counter alongside other weapons. Shortly after, Adinkra arrived to begin his morning cleaning duties at the charge office.

The counter NCO and the station orderly briefly left the office to allow Adinkra to clean, leaving him unsupervised.

Seizing the opportunity, Adinkra stole the rifle and the SMG magazine, valued at GH₵ 52,834.99, by concealing them in his clothes. He left the charge office unnoticed by the officers on duty.

Adinkra then went to a nearby tricycle, where he found an old brownish Ecola bag. He hid the stolen weapon in the bag and returned to the charge office to complete his work.

Around 5:40 am, the station’s armourer arrived at the charge office to place all returned rifles in the armoury. However, upon checking, he discovered that the AK-47 rifle and SMG magazine were missing. Chief Inspector Agyei was notified, and an official complaint was made.

Following the investigation, Adinkra was arrested and interrogated. Initially, he denied any involvement in the theft but later admitted to the crime. He led investigators to the location where he had hidden the stolen weapon and the magazine, which were subsequently recovered.

In his caution statement, Adinkra claimed that a friend, involved in illegal mining activities (galamsey), had promised him GH₵ 7,000 in exchange for obtaining the weapon.

Adinkra was formally charged with the theft and brought before the court. The investigation is ongoing to identify the intended recipient of the stolen rifle. The case has been adjourned to January 21, 2025.
