CJ vetting disrupted as MPs argue over Baffoe-Bonnie’s nomination

A heated exchange erupted in Parliament on Monday during the vetting of Chief Justice nominee Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, prompting the Appointments Committee to suspend proceedings temporarily.

The confrontation began when Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin referred to the nominee as a “disputed Chief Justice nominee,” drawing objections from Chairman of the Committee Bernard Ahiafor and Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader

Ayariga accused Afenyo-Markin of attempting to “run down” the nominee, demanding that he withdraw and apologise. He insisted that the Minority Leader’s comments were inappropriate for a vetting session.

Afenyo-Markin reacts

Afenyo-Markin, however, stood by his remarks, arguing that his comments were based on ongoing legal challenges over the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Tensions escalated further after Afenyo-Markin described a committee led by Justice Samuel Pwamang on the Torkornoo case as a “travesty of justice.”

With both the Majority and Minority leaders refusing to yield ground, Committee Chairman Bernard Ahiafor called for a brief suspension to restore order.

The vetting of Justice Baffoe-Bonnie is taking place amid political and constitutional controversy following his nomination by President John Dramani Mahama, while multiple suits contesting Torkornoo’s removal remain pending in court.
