CJ probe: Akim Swedru MP pushes for live broadcast of committee hearings

He insists that the process must be transparent

Akim Swedru Member of Parliament Kennedy Nyarko Osei has called for live television coverage of the upcoming hearings of the committee investigating petitions against Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

He insists that the process must be transparent.

Presidential Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, had announced that the committee chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang will begin its hearings on Thursday (15 May) and will sit three times a week. Its findings and recommendations will be submitted to the President.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday (14 May) however, the Kennedy Nyarko Osei warned that Ghanaians would not accept hearings conducted in secrecy.

“For the purpose of transparency and also to carry the Ghanaian people along, we demand that the committee’s hearings must be televised live. Ghanaians will not accept any hearings that will be done in secrecy,” the MP stated.

The five-member committee was set up by President John Dramani Mahama following three petitions filed against the Chief Justice. The committee’s formation is in line with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution, which empowers the President to establish such a body upon determining a prima facie case.

The case has drawn significant public attention, with many citizens and legal experts eager to follow the proceedings, which could have far-reaching implications for Ghana’s judiciary.

The opposition NPP had earlier led a protest describing the development as an assault on the judiciary.
