CITEG petitions NPP over alleged bias in post-election “Thank You” tour

CITEG is calling on the leadership of NPP to ensure equal opportunity for all former aspirants to engage the party base

A civic group, Citizen Eye Ghana (CITEG), has petitioned the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), expressing concern over what it describes as an attempt by the party to use its nationwide post-election “Thank You” tour to unofficially endorse former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia as its 2028 presidential candidate.

In a letter dated 22 April and addressed to the NPP National Chairman, the group accused the party of abandoning neutrality and using official platforms, branding, and resources to promote Bawumia at the expense of other potential aspirants.

“The NPP currently has no presidential candidate,” the letter states. “Yet, through the packaging of this tour, the party appears to be unofficially crowning Bawumia as its chosen flagbearer.”

CITEG questioned why the tour is centred on Bawumia, sidelining other individuals who contested the 2024 presidential primaries, including Kennedy Agyapong, Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and others.

“The use of the party’s letterhead, platforms, and organisational structure to amplify one aspirant’s visibility is inappropriate, unfair, and fundamentally undemocratic,” the group’s founder and president, Alex Kwaku Tetteh, wrote.

They warned that such actions could fracture party unity and affect the integrity of the party’s internal democratic process heading into the 2028 elections.

CITEG has called on the party leadership to:

  1. Restructure the “Thank You” tour to reflect inclusivity and neutrality.

  2. Refrain from using party-branded resources to promote any aspirant.

  3. Ensure equal opportunity for all former aspirants to engage the party base.

  4. Commit to a transparent and fair candidate selection process.

The petition was copied to several high-profile party figures, including former Presidents Nana Akufo-Addo and John Agyekum Kufuor, members of the Council of Elders, and notable aspirants from the NPP’s last presidential primary.

CITEG concluded by urging the NPP leadership to act as neutral referees and not participants in the selection of its next flagbearer, warning that anything less “will be rejected by the people”.
