Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints heeds Otumfuo’s appeal, donates equipment worth $100,000 to KATH

The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi has received a donation of essential medical equipment worth $100,000 from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to support healthcare delivery amid growing diagnostic challenges.

The hospital, one of Ghana’s main referral centres, has been struggling with limited diagnostic capacity due to faulty Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT) scan machines, according to its Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo.

“There’s one MRI machine that is working at fault and it’s so expensive getting these items. CT Scans are not working. We’re trying to bring these to life,” Dr. Baidoo said at a ceremony on Friday (17 October) to receive the donation.

“We’re grateful to the Church for the donation… we’ll continue to use your medium to appeal to all well-meaning Ghanaians for help.”

The donation forms part of the church’s response to an appeal under the “Heal Komfo Anokye” project, an initiative spearheaded by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to renovate and equip the 71-year-old hospital.

The consignment includes 40 cardiac tables, 15 electronic beds, 20 patient monitors, 15 hydraulic patient stretchers, dual ABS medicine trolleys, 30 folding bed screens, 30 wheelchairs, 15 crash trolleys, and 40 drip stands.

Dr. Baidoo said the project’s funding requirements had risen due to inflation and unstable economic conditions, and called on other organisations to emulate the church’s example.

Elder Isaac Morrison, the Second Counsellor in the Africa Area Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said the donation was in line with the church’s mission of healing and compassion.

“These items are not merely tools. They’re instruments of healing, symbols of our solidarity and God’s expression of love for His children,” Elder Morrison said.

“At the core of our faith is the eternal truth that every person is a beloved child of God. When a mother in Bantama cannot access safe delivery care, or a child in Suame suffers due to the absence of medical equipment, we see not just statistics, but sons and daughters of God in need.”

He added that the church remained committed to supporting projects that advance humanitarian causes across the world.

The Ashanti Regional Director of Health, Dr. Fred Adomako Boateng, said the gesture would strengthen Ghana’s progress toward achieving Universal Health Coverage by 2030.
