The Western Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Nana Kojo Toku, has announced plans to enhance the railway infrastructure throughout Ghana, with a focus on the Western Rail Line.
Nana Toku shared insights during an interview on a local radio station in Takoradi, revealing that the government is in the process of overhauling outdated and neglected rail tracks and wagons to prepare for reconstruction projects.
He emphasised the government’s commitment to upgrading the railway system to boost trade and stimulate local economic development.

• *Recent Developments:* During a recent trip to China, President Akufo-Addo engaged with Chinese investors regarding railway infrastructure enhancement. Nana Toku expressed optimism that substantial progress could be seen by next year.
• *Track Reconstruction:* The government is working to decommission old rail materials, allowing for the introduction of modern electric-powered locomotives, as discussed with the Chinese investors. This initiative follows previous issues where rail lines were diverted during past administrations.
• *Long-term Project:* Toku clarified that this railway project will not be completed in a year or five; it is a long-term endeavor. The clearing of old rail materials is expected to be completed by mid-year, leading to feasibility studies by the Chinese partners.
• *Allegations Addressed:* He also addressed public concerns regarding allegations of his involvement in the sale of old rail materials belonging to the Ghana Railway Company Limited. He asserted that any dealings by local constituency chairmen with scrap dealers were conducted without his knowledge.
Nana Toku remains hopeful about the future of Ghana’s railway sector, emphasizing the importance of modernizing the infrastructure for the nation’s growth and connectivity.
