Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger are in a more functional space says Burkinabè official

On the 27th of February, diplomats, including Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Cooperation Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, met African diplomats in Ouagadougou to clarify the reason for the withdrawal of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso(Alliance of Sahel States) from ECOWAS.

According to Traoré, the decision of the three nations to withdraw from ECOWAS was motivated by the organization’s deviation from the ideals of its founding fathers.

He reveals that the sanctions were inhumane and did not protect the people of the sanctioned countries.

When the coup took place in Niger on the 26 July, 2023, ECOWAS decided to intervene militarily. However, while ECOWAS believed that their intervention was necessary to restore order, the people of Niger thought that ECOWAS should have mobilized troops to support countries facing terrorism instead.

The Sahelian region in Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Chad and some parts of northern Nigeria have been faced with acts of terrorism that have led to violence, disrupting peace and paths to democracy in the region.

Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso have faced consecutive coups since 2021, with Mali facing acts of terrorism, including conflict-related sexual violence and the recruitment of young boys as soldiers to engage in armed violence since 2012.

He believes that the AES will provide the three countries with a more functional space where an integrated territorial approach will be easier to implement in the fight against the insecurity and acts of terrorism that affect the West African region.

Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré emphasizes the significance of having an official discourse between the heads of the AES and the leaders of ECOWAS to avoid further misinterpretations and promote peace in the region moving forward.
