Censure committee hearing: Ofori-Atta insists on a fair hearing

Ken Ofori-Atta, Minister for Finance

The Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, has asked the Minority National Democratic Congress in Parliament to furnish him with documents that it will rely upon to execute a motion of censure initiated against him.

The minister’s lawyer, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, made this request on Tuesday when the parliamentary ad hoc committee hearing the motion began sitting.

Otchere-Darko said the rules of natural justice and fair hearing required not only that the accused be heard but that he be furnished with the documents which form the basis of the allegations made against him.

He insisted, therefore, that the Minority, led by Haruna Iddrisu, provide the documents to him and his client.

Hesitant Minority

The request was met with hesitancy by the Minority, who appeared unprepared and argued that the documents were already in the public domain and did not have to be tendered.

After much back and forth on the matter, the co-chairmen of the committee, K T Hammond and Dominic Ayine, ruled that the Minority should present the documents to the minister and the committee.

The documents were subsequently listed.
