The Vice-President of the Republic of Ghana and presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has declared that Ghana has benefited immensely from the wise counsel of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, throughout his 25-year reign on the golden stool.
Dr Bawumia said the Asante king has played a remarkable role in helping to shape democratic rule in the country, adding that his influential role in the sustenance of peace in Ghana, especially under the Fourth Republic, will be remembered for ever.
The vice-president made these observations on 12 December 2021 at the launch of the Otumfuo Commemorative Gold Coin at Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.
In brief remarks during the launch, Dr Bawumia said: “Otumfuo Osei Tutu is a pillar of peace, and an asset, not only to Asanteman, but the entire nation.”

Monumental achievement
In February 2022, the commemorative gold coin was presented to the vice-president in his office at Jubilee House, Accra.
At the presentation ceremony, Dr Bawumia again noted that at a point where many others had given up all hope for Dagbon, Otumfuo rose to the task, applying tact and diplomacy to lead the charge to bring peace to the troubled area.
“Leading the committee of eminent chiefs to restore peace to Dagbon after 17 years of a chieftaincy conflict was a monumental achievement, for which Otumfuo Osei Tutu II deserves to be celebrated.
“Indeed, the restoration of peace set Dagbon back on the path of progress,” Vice-President Bawumia said.
