Cedi@60: Bank of Ghana sets 19 July for anniversary events

The cedi, first issued on 19 July 1965, replaced the Ghanaian pound as the country’s official currency, becoming a symbol of Ghana’s economic sovereignty

The Bank of Ghana (BoG), has announced plans to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Ghanaian cedi, the country’s sole legal tender, on 19 July.

The cedi, first issued on 19 July 1965, replaced the Ghanaian pound as the country’s official currency, becoming a symbol of Ghana’s economic sovereignty. Over the past six decades, the currency has undergone various changes to adapt to the nation’s economic needs, according to a statement released by the BoG on May 13.

“To adapt to the changing demands of the Ghanaian economy, the cedi has evolved through several modifications in form and policy direction. Ghana’s tenacity, innovation, and quest for economic stability are all embodied in the cedi’s reforms, from the first note and coins to the safe currency we use today,” the statement said.

The BoG outlined a series of nationwide activities to mark the milestone, running from July to December 2025. These will include an official launch, public exhibitions, educational campaigns, and stakeholder forums aimed at reflecting on the cedi’s history and its impact on the nation’s economy.

The central bank also emphasized the importance of maintaining the value and integrity of the currency, describing it as a symbol of national pride and shared aspirations for a prosperous future.

“This anniversary offers an opportunity for Ghanaians to reflect on the history of the cedi, to celebrate the progress made, and to reaffirm our collective responsibility to protect the value and integrity of the currency,” the statement added.
