The Ghana cedi has weakened further against the US dollar, trading at GHC11.60 to US$1 on the interbank market, according to the Bank of Ghana’s latest reference rates.
The figure, published on Monday (1 September 2025), reflects the weighted median interbank mid-rate at which commercial banks transact foreign exchange among themselves. It marks a notable depreciation from recent weeks, as pressure continues to mount on the local currency.
The interbank rate, typically more favourable than consumer-facing exchange rates, often serves as the benchmark for commercial banks and forex bureaux in setting their own rates.
In comparison, retail customers are currently facing slightly higher dollar rates across commercial banks and remittance platforms, averaging between GHC11.85 and GHC12.15 to the dollar.
The cedi’s slide comes at a time when analysts are pointing to a mix of global and domestic factors influencing the local currency, including sustained demand for the US dollar to cover imports, slower-than-expected foreign inflows, and investor sentiments around Ghana’s ongoing economic recovery programme.
Despite the pressures, the Bank of Ghana maintains that measures introduced in recent months – including tighter monetary policy, targeted forex interventions and improved gold-for-oil arrangements – are aimed at stabilising the cedi in the medium term.
The interbank rate will continue to serve as the benchmark for both banks and the broader economy, with businesses and individuals closely monitoring its performance amid global economic uncertainty.
