A heartbreaking tragedy has rocked the quiet border community of Frimpongkrom, near Nkrankwanta in the Dormaa West District of the Bono Region.
On Sunday (15 June 2025), a cattle herdsman identified as Mamud allegedly murdered his pregnant wife, Barikisu, in a disturbing act of domestic violence.
According to eyewitness accounts, Barikisu, believed to be in her early twenties and about four months pregnant—had endured prolonged physical and emotional abuse at the hands of her husband. Neighbours described her as a gentle and reserved woman who had been suffering in silence.
In the days leading up to the incident, the couple reportedly spoke with their landlord, identified as Abdullai, during which Barikisu expressed her desire to return to her hometown, citing ongoing maltreatment. However, in the middle of the conversation, the landlord received an urgent phone call and briefly stepped away, asking the couple to wait for his return.
In his absence, Mamud allegedly spoke to his wife in their native Fulani language and persuaded her to return to the village with him. The two left together.
Tragically, later that evening, while the couple were having dinner, Mamud is said to have suddenly risen and launched a violent attack on his pregnant wife, killing her on the spot.
The gruesome act sent waves of shock, fear, and sorrow throughout the community, leaving residents stunned by the brutal loss.
Following the incident, the suspect fled the scene and remains at large. Health officials later performed a post-mortem surgical procedure to retrieve the unborn child before Barikisu was laid to rest.
Frimpongkrom, located along the border with Côte d’Ivoire, has become the focus of an urgent manhunt. Security authorities in the neighbouring country have joined Ghanaian investigators in the search for Mamud, as efforts intensify to bring him to justice.
Local authorities have called on the public to assist with any information that could lead to his arrest while urging calm in the wake of the tragedy.
