Carnage on roads: Government to roll out spot fines, says NRSA

The spot fine system is expected to quicken the administration of justice for minor traffic offenders and also help increase compliance with road traffic regulations

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has hinted of plans to introduce a spot fine to help reduce the spate of road accidents in Ghana.

It comes after 17 persons died in multiple road crashes over the past weekend raising concerns about safety on Ghana’s roads.

The spot fine system when introduced, is expected to quicken the administration of justice for minor traffic offenders and also help increase compliance with road traffic regulations and reduce acts of indiscipline by drivers.

Talking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on Thursday (17 March) Ing David Osafo Adonteng, acting director general of NRSA said work is far advance to secure approval for the digital project.

“There is a working team made up of the National Road Safety Authority, the police themselves, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), together with the Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Finance,” he said.

“As I speak to you, right from here, our next meeting is in the afternoon, we have advanced it to a stage where very soon, and I mean very soon because I know what I am talking about.

“The working team has now designed the infrastructure, the architecture of the system you are talking about,    we are hoping that we get the approval of that particular system somewhere on 22 March and then move on to putting in place the necessary infrastructure. When this comes, you will see Europe in Africa,” Adonteng said.
