Vatican City – 8 May 2025 In a moment of global significance, white smoke emerged from the Sistine Chapel chimney at 6:08 PM CET, signalling the election of a new pope by the College of Cardinals. Minutes later, Cardinal Dominique Mamberti stepped on to the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica and proclaimed the words: “Habemus Papam!” – “We have a pope!”
The new leader of the Catholic Church is Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, a historic selection that makes him the first American to ascend to the papacy.
🧭 Who is Pope Leo XIV?
Born in Chicago in 1955, Pope Leo XIV brings decades of diverse experience to the Vatican.
A member of the Augustinian order, he spent many years in missionary service in Peru, eventually becoming bishop of Chiclayo.
In 2023, he was appointed Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops under Pope Francis, giving him critical influence over episcopal appointments around the world.
Prevost is known for his pastoral sensitivity, cross-cultural experience, and administrative competence – qualities that made him a strong contender in the eyes of many observers.
🌍 Papacy for a global church
The decision to elect a non-European pope continues the Church’s trend toward global inclusivity. With more than 40% of the world’s Catholics living in Latin America and a growing population in Africa and Asia, the Church’s leadership is gradually reflecting its demographic reality.
His choice of the name Leo XIV evokes historical associations with strong doctrinal leadership, referencing Pope Leo XIII’s deep engagement with social issues and papal reform.
⚖️ Key challenges ahead
Pope Leo XIV inherits a complex legacy from Pope Francis, including:
-
Declining Mass attendance and secularization in Europe and North America
-
Growing persecution of Christians in parts of Africa and Asia
-
The Vatican’s need for financial and governance reform
-
Ethical dilemmas posed by climate change, artificial intelligence and mass migration
How Leo XIV balances traditional doctrine with the need for modernisation will likely define the tone of his papacy.
🙏 A moment of celebration
As he stepped on to the balcony to deliver his first Urbi et Orbi blessing, Pope Leo XIV was greeted by tens of thousands of jubilant Catholics in St Peter’s Square – many waving American flags in a rare and emotional moment of national and global pride.
Church bells rang out across the Vatican as chants of “Viva il Papa!” echoed through the plaza.
📅 What’s next?
Pope Leo XIV’s inaugural Mass is expected to take place within the next few days, followed by meetings with key Vatican officials and diplomatic delegations.
His early appointments and messages will offer clues into the direction he plans to take the Catholic Church in a rapidly changing world.
