Calm restored in Ejura as police beef up security

Protesters poured out on to the streets of Ejura to demand justice for the murder of the local citizen journalist Ibrahim Mohammed

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has beefed up security in Ejura in the Ashanti Region to restore calm and order, after the area was thrown into turmoil on Tuesday 29 June.

The confusion was sparked by the deaths of two young men, both residents of the Dagomba Line area of the town, after bullets were fired by security officers to disperse irate youth who were clashing with them.

This incident followed the burial of Ibrahim Mohammed, alias Kaaka, aged 45, who was reportedly assaulted brutally while returning home by motorbike on Saturday night.

Kaaka died on Monday at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.

In the ensuing confusion, four people also sustained gunshot wounds. They are now receiving treatment in hospital.

Meanwhile, two suspects – Ibrahim Issaka, alias Anyaas, and Fuseini Alhassan – have been arrested in connection with the alleged murder of the 45-year-old man.

On avisit by the Ghana News Agency to Ejura on Tuesday evening, there was a significant police presence as security personnel patrolled the area.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Godwin Ahianyo, the Ashanti regional police public relations officer, said at a media briefing that despite the relative calm, officials were not taking chances.

“The Ghana Police Command and representatives of the National Security Council, as well as traditional authorities, have met the leadership of Dagomba Line to impress on the aggrieved youth to remain calm,” he said.

The Police Command had opened an investigation into the shootings and the deaths, ASP Ahianyo said.
