Calls mount for action as sexual corruption cases against women increase

Concerns are growing across Ghana as incidents of sexual corruption involving women continue to rise, drawing attention from both civil society and advocacy groups.

The Executive Director of Transparency International Ghana, Mary Awelana Addah, has decried the alarming trend, noting that women are increasingly being subjected to sexual exploitation in exchange for job opportunities, promotions, or other forms of advancement.

She emphasised that such acts not only violate human rights but also erode integrity and fairness in both public and private institutions.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ engagement in Tamale, Mrs Addah stressed the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address the issue.

She explained that sexual corruption, often referred to as “sextortion”, is a form of bribery where sex becomes the currency of exchange instead of money.

According to her, this form of abuse has become deeply entrenched in various sectors, including education, employment, and public service delivery, and disproportionately affects women and girls seeking opportunities to improve their livelihoods.

Participants at the engagement expressed similar concerns, calling for stronger enforcement of laws to protect victims and punish offenders.

They urged government agencies, employers, and regulatory bodies to establish clear reporting mechanisms and ensure that complaints are treated with confidentiality and sensitivity.

Some participants also suggested that public awareness campaigns be intensified to empower women to speak out against sexual exploitation without fear of stigma or retaliation.

Transparency International Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to working with partners, including the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, to combat sexual corruption.
