Chinese EV giant BYD unveils world’s largest car carrier to power global expansion

Chinese EV giant BYD unveils the world’s largest car carrier, the Explorer No. 1, to accelerate its global expansion in electric vehicle markets.

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) powerhouse BYD has launched the world’s largest car carrier ship, a massive step in its bid to expand its dominance in global auto exports.

The newly unveiled vessel, called the Explorer No. 1, was showcased at a ceremony in China and is designed specifically to transport thousands of vehicles at a time to overseas markets, including Europe, Southeast Asia, and Australia. The ship can carry up to 7,000 vehicles, making it the largest of its kind currently operating.

This move signals BYD’s ambition to not only dominate domestic EV sales — where it already rivals Tesla — but also to become a global automotive powerhouse. The company’s aggressive shipping strategy ensures it controls its supply chain end-to-end, from manufacturing to logistics, reducing dependence on third-party shipping companies and minimizing transportation costs and delays.

The Explorer No. 1 is not just about size. It represents BYD’s integrated vision of its future: vertically controlling production, logistics, and delivery, a strategy long associated with Tesla but now being fully embraced by Chinese automakers aiming for global influence.

According to BYD officials, the carrier will primarily service BYD’s growing demand in export markets, where interest in affordable and high-quality Chinese EVs is surging. The ship’s launch coincides with a broader expansion plan that includes setting up overseas factories and sales hubs.

The announcement comes amid growing global competition in the electric vehicle space. Traditional automakers from Europe, the U.S., and Japan are facing increasing pressure from Chinese brands like BYD, NIO, and XPeng, which offer competitive pricing, technology, and rapid scaling capabilities.

BYD’s investment in its own shipping infrastructure highlights a trend where automakers are rethinking logistics as a strategic advantage rather than just an operational necessity.

The Explorer No. 1 is expected to begin operational voyages soon, carrying thousands of EVs to key markets where BYD aims to further disrupt traditional auto industries.
