Voters in the Akwatia constituency of the Eastern Region will head to the polls on today (Tuesday 2 September) in a parliamentary by-election seen as a key test of support for the country’s two main political parties ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The vote follows the death of Ernest Kumi, the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmaker who held the seat. More than 50,000 people are registered to cast their ballots.
The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has nominated Bernard Bediako Baidoo, while the NPP is fielding Solomon Kwame Asumadu.
Both candidates have campaigned intensively in recent days, backed by high-profile visits from senior party officials.
Security has been tightened, with the Ghana Police Service deploying over 5,500 officers across the constituency. Police warned they would clamp down on violence, intimidation or any breaches of electoral law.
The Electoral Commission (EC) said it had put in place measures to ensure a transparent vote, including timely distribution of materials and swift collation of results.
