Senegal to invest US$4.4 million in hydrocarbons training centre

The hydrocarbons training centre will strongly involve local youth in the oil sector and to make Senegal a sub-regional hub for oil and gas training

Senegal will invest US$4.4 million in the construction of an oil and gas training centre, which will partially be funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB), Africa Oil and Gas reports.

The school will be built in Bango, close to the Mauritanian border, which shares the vast Grand Tortue Ahmeyim gas field being developed jointly by the countries.

The Minister of Professional Training, Dame Diop, says that the goal is to involve local youth strongly in the country’s nascent petroleum sector.

She added that the geographical location and size of the school aims to make it a sub-regional hub for oil and gas training.

Building work has started and will be finished within 24 months. The school will be able to cater to 2,000 students in the first phase, with potential expansions to come.

Senegal’s first hydrocarbons production is planned for 2023 from two main areas: the Sangomar oilfield offshore Dakar and the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim gas field, which straddles the Mauritania-Senegal offshore border.

Since first discoveries in 2015, Senegal has created a strong institutional and legal framework through the establishment of the Oil and Gas Strategic Orientation Committee in charge of implementing the presidential vision, a new petroleum code and a historic co-operation agreement with Mauritania, among other measures.
