Nurse migration: Make profession attractive, says IMaH nurse

The IMaH nurse said government can improve productivity in nursing by increasing investment in training the nurses to acquire and improve skills in the various specialties of the profession

Joseline Adjoa Enchill, a registered general nurse attached to the International Maritime Hospital in Tema has said government must invest in the health sector to make it attractive for nurses to stay.

She said this is the most effective way government can reduce nurse migration from Ghana.

The health worker said nurses in the country give their best to save lives, however, they are faced with many challenges with no policy to address them.

She stated that the reason other countries still employ Ghanaian nurses is because they are highly intelligent and skilled.

Enchill was speaking at the Ghana News Agency’s (GNA) health communication platform in Tema, dubbed: “Your Health! Our Collective Responsibility.”

The platform enhances dissemination of health information to influence health choices and literacy.

“Ghanaian nurses are very intelligent; hence the UK is taking them. Most of my colleagues who are outside will tell you that they see a difference. Ghanaian nurses [who have migrated from the country] are doing marvellously well because they are paid well…so why will they come back?” she asked.

The nursing profession is one of the most important components of the health service, and the health of Ghanaians is closely related to the quality and efficiency of nurses, Enchill emphasised.

She said government can improve productivity in nursing by increasing investment in training the nurses to acquire and improve skills in the various specialties of the profession.

Enchill said, “The reason most people travel outside for healthcare services is the availability of specialties in those countries due to the intensified investment in the sector…and these could be inculcated into Ghana’s health service.”

The health worker said Ghana must improve its nurse-patient ratio so that nurses can spend more time with each patient and enhance the livelihoods of the populace.

Francis Ameyibor, the Tema Regional Manager of GNA, said everyone’s health is important and should be prioritised for a healthy society and enhanced productivity.
