Black Bombers have resumed non-residential camping, says Ephson
According to the communications director of the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) this has been the most difficult qualifiers the team has ever experienced
Ghana’s national boxing team, the Black Bombers, are back in training as they face a make-or-break final chance to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The team will be competing in the World Olympic Boxing Qualifier held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 23 May to 3 June, 2024. This comes after failing to secure qualification spots at both the African qualifiers in Dakar, Senegal (September 2023) and the first World Qualifier in Busto Arsizio, Italy (February 2024).
Speaking exclusively to asaaseradio.com, Charles Sergius Jojo Ephson, the communications director of the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF), revealed that the Black Bombers have begun a month-long non-residential training camp at the Accra Sports Stadium.
“As I speak now, the team has resumed the non-residential camping,” Ephson stated. “They’ll be there till the end of April, when they will move to a special residential camping I am yet to confirm the specific place they will have it and will depart for Bangkok, Thailand, on 25th of May to be ready for the tournament.”
This qualifying process has proven to be the most challenging for the Black Bombers in recent history. Missing out in Bangkok would mark the first time since 2004 that Ghana has been absent from an Olympic boxing competition.
Ephson recognises the pressure: “This has been the most difficult qualifiers we have ever experienced. We went to Dakar, Senegal, we couldn’t get any slots. We went to the first world qualifier in Italy, we couldn’t get any slots. Now we are making it to the final opportunity available in Thailand. So that is why we are parading the best of the best, those we have hopes in.”
The Black Bombers are determined to punch their tickets to Paris and uphold Ghana’s prestigious boxing legacy at the Olympic Games.
