PURC threatens to sanction utility providers over power outages

The PURC says it will not hesitate to sanction any service provider found to have breached regulatory standards

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has threatened to sanction any player in the power sector found culpable of non-compliance to regulatory standards and benchmark.

The warning is coming on the back of the recent intermittent power outages.

A statement issued and signed by Executive Secretary of PURC, Mami Dufie Ofori, assured consumers it has begun investigation into the recent development.

“The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission has noted with a lot of concerns, the increase in power outages to consumers in recent times. This poor service was compounded by the total system collapse that occurred in the transmission network resulting in a nationwide blackout on Sunday 7 March,” it said.

It added: “Whilst acknowledging the press release from GRIDCo, ECG and NEDCo on the incidences, the PURC wishes to assure consumers that it is investigating the issue and will take appropriate regulatory actions against any utility in the power value chain found noncompliant with regulatory standards and benchmarks.”

It has therefore advised consumers not to hesitate in lodging complaint to any of the utility service providers and subsequently to its outfit if they are not addressed.
