Oti Region: Tokuroano St Paul’s R/C basic school appeals for support to complete school block

A visit to the school by Asaase News showed that the foundation for the classroom block has been dug with heaps of sand and gravels close to it, giving an impression that construction work will begin soon

About 14 months ago, pupils of the St. Paul’s R/C Basic school in Tokuroano, in the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region, had to mould mud bricks to build their own classrooms after many efforts to get support from government and other authorities proved futile.

On 1 February 2022, Asaase Radio aired a news report about the plight of the pupils in Tokuroano where they had to mould bricks from mud to build their own classrooms.

The pupils and staff appealed to the government and other stakeholders to build a classroom block for the school.

Following the report, the Krachi East Municipal Assembly made a commitment to support the school by building a temporary structure to facilitate teaching and learning.

The pupils have had to endure teaching and learning under trees. Academic work comes to a halt whenever it threatens to rain. As the rainy season begins, pupils of Tokoroanu will endure many days of no academic work because they still learn under trees.

The project began steadily some months later. A local mason said the project would be completed in three months. Augustine Abuenya confirmed to Asaase News on 20 July 2022 that he was awarded the contract to build the classroom block, however, he had not received the financial resources to continue with the project.

The assembly member of Tokuroano, Maclean Boasenke, confirmed that the contract was awarded to a local contractor to work on a daily basis and complete it in three months in 2022.

The project is currently at its roofing stage. The municipal assembly has complained about financial constraints.

The pupils and mason are appealing to the Krachi East Municipal Assembly to make funds available to complete the project.

The school also lacks a common room for teachers and a storage room.
