Ghana is still a safe haven, says EU

The outgoing head of EU delegation to Ghana, Diana Acconcia, says Ghana remains a peaceful country in the sub-region despite recent crimes and protests

The head of European Union Delegation to Ghana, Diana Acconcia has said Ghana is still a safe haven despite recent crimes and protests in some parts of the country.

Two persons died last week in the Ejura protest in the Ashanti Region while demanding for justice over the killing of a social media activist, Ibrahim “Kaaka” Mohammed.

A group of soldiers also went on rampage in Wa assaulting residents in the Upper West Region over a missing phone belonging to one of the service men. The development has sparked huge public outcry with some describing it as a state of insecurity in the country.

However, speaking on The Asaase Breakfast Show with Kojo Mensah on Tuesday (6 July), Acconcia said the recent development cannot not be compared to citizen unrest in the Sahel Region.

“We are concerned about security in the whole of West Africa Region for sure, and Ghana is not the most worrisome area at the moment.

“Of course, we are all following the events of the last days regarding unrest and all that, but I don’t see at least from where I am sitting a link between sort of citizenship unrest with the situation in the Sahel, in the wider region,”  Acconcia said.

The outgoing head of EU Delegation to Ghana said the bloc is working with Ghana to address the state of insecurity in the sub-region.
