GRA deploys technology to rake in more revenue from rent tax

GRA says it is hopeful the introduction of technology in facilitating rent tax could be a game- changer

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has announced it will from this year deploy technology to facilitate its work in mobilising rent tax across the country.

The move forms part of some new initiatives been rolled out by the GRA to modernize its operation in meeting with current trends in revenue mobilization.

Amishaddai Owusu-Amoah, acting commissioner-general of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), revealed this in an interview with Asaase Radio.

“We are working on a technology that allows you to be able to identify all the properties in a metropolitan area and to be able to identify wether this property belongs to this person or the other and wether this property is rented or owner occupied, ” Amishaddai said.

He added ‘’So, this are things that we are finalizing, and we are sure, If we know that this property is not owner occupied and is on rental, we should be able to come and know whether you have paid your rent taxes or not.’’

Rent tax is one of the areas where tax analyst believe government can rake in more taxes, but that has not been realized due to challenges by the GRA in collecting rent tax over the years,

Amishaddai Owusu-Amoah said the authority has also completed the piloting of payment of vehicle income tax online to make it easier for taxpayers.

He said, “If you take things like vehicle income tax, todays we have finished the piloting where you should be able to use the USSD code to dial and get the selection to be able to pay your vehicle income tax.”

Touching on customer service, Amishaddai Owusu -Amoah said there is renewed commitment to recruit more staff to enhance customer service.

He said, “We have set up this tax audit and ensure they are going to advertise the numbers and ensure people are treated fairly.”

The GRA is hoping to mobilize about GHC60 billion after exceeding its revised revenue target of GHC45,338.69 million for 2020.
