Azumah Nelson, Ghana’s boxing legend has said his toughest bout in his entire career was the fight against Mexican boxer Mario Martinez.

In a career spanning 28 years and six months, Azumah Nelson who recently turned 65 years fought 47 times with 39 wins, two draws and six losses. Twenty-eight of those wins came by way of knockouts.

He was a two-weight world champion, having held the WBC featherweight title from 1984 to 1987 and the WBC super-featherweight title twice between 1988 and 1997.

Among some of his accolades were also winning gold medals at the Commonwealth Games and African Games in 1978, before going on to win the Amateur Boxer of the Year at the Sports Writers Association of Ghana awards in the same year.

“My toughest fight was with a Mexican— Martinez. All hopes were banked on him to be the next Super Featherweight champion but when we met, he definitely realised that he’d met his match. He was so tough but I won the fight on a split decision,” he told Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (26 July).

“On the night of the fight, two ladies tried to come into my room. My guard turned them away but they wouldn’t refuse to leave until the police came,” Azumah told host Kwaku Nyhira-Addo.
