Germany donates 1.5 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccines to Ghana

Meanwhile the director of communication at the office of the President, Eugene Arhin, has said President Akufo-Addo is dispatching a flight to take delivery of 1,500,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines donated to the country by Germany.

Addressing the presidential press corps on Monday (30 August), Arhin said the donation follows a meeting between President Akufo-Addo and the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, in a recent visit to the European country.

“The German Chancellor, I am happy to inform the Ghanaian people made it known to the President that a total of 1,200,000 vaccines were to be given to Ghana, basically, the AstraZeneca vaccines. A few hours ago, I got confirmation from the President that this has increased from 1,200,000 to 1,500,000 and steps have already been taken, in fact, according to the President, he is dispatching a plane immediately to go to Germany to take delivery of the 1,500,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccines,” Arhin said.

Extra vaccines

Arhin further indicated that as part of efforts to secure vaccines to vaccinate the Ghanaian people, the United States government has also donated 1,500,000 doses of the Moderna vaccines to Ghana.

“All in all, we should be hitting five million vaccine doses so far and I believe at this particular stage, it is a good initiative that has been undertaken by the government of President Akufo-Addo towards helping to rid our country of COVID-19 and hopefully, his pledge of ensuring that 20 million Ghanaians by the end of this year are vaccinated, slowly but surely, I believe we are no cause for alarm realising that particular pledge of ensuring that the entire adult population of Ghana is vaccinated,” he said.

Regional tour

Arhin also disclosed that President Akufo-Addo will embark on a tour of the Western North and Western Regions of the country from 3 to 6 September 2021. The President will subsequently tour the Oti and Volta Regions as well.
