Black Stars held to scrappy 2-2 draw against Uganda

The Black Stars 2-2 draw against the Cranes of Uganda extends the team's winless run to seven games

Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Uganda’s Cranes in a friendly on Tuesday (26 March) at the Stade de Marrakech in Morocco.

The match served as a warm-up for both sides ahead of the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Head coach Otto Addo opted to shuffle his lineup following a narrow 2-1 defeat to Nigeria in their previous friendly. Five changes were made, with Joseph Wollacott, Denis Odoi, Ebenezer Annan, Mohammed Abu, and Abdul Fatawu Issahaku coming in for Lawrence Ati-Zigi, Alidu Seidu, Patrick Kpozo, Forson Amankwah, and Baba Iddrisu.

The Black Stars started brightly, taking the lead through defender Jerome Opoku in the 7th minute. Opoku rose highest to meet a Jordan Ayew corner, guiding the ball past Ugandan goalkeeper Tom Ikara.

However, their advantage was short-lived as Uganda drew level from a penalty in the 23rd minute, converted by Asante Kotoko forward Steven Mukwala.

Ghana restored their lead just five minutes later, with Jordan Ayew stepping up to convert from the penalty spot himself. The first half ended with the Black Stars holding a narrow lead.

The second half saw a resurgent Uganda threaten an equaliser, and their persistence paid off in the 82nd minute. Muhammad Shaban found the net to level the score at 2-2.

The Black Stars would end the match with nine men, as defender Mohammed Salisu and midfielder Alidu Seidu would receive their matching orders in the 89th and 93rd minutes, respectively.

The draw extends Ghana’s winless run to seven games. Head Coach Addo will be looking to address the defensive frailties exposed in the latter stages of the match as they gear up for the crucial World Cup qualifiers in June.
