Water shortages: Aggrieved schools have the money to pay their debts, says GWCL

The aggrieved schools include Yilo Krobo SHS, Krobo Girls SHS, Anum Presby SHS, Anum Presby Vocational Institute, Boso Senior High Technical and Akro Senior High Technical School

Stanley Martey, the director of communications for Ghana Water Company Ltd (GWCL), has said the five schools in the Eastern Region that have been cut off from their water supply have the means to pay their debts.

Speaking to Caleb Ahinakwah on The Big Bulletin on Wednesday (10 January), Martey said, “The management of these schools have the money to pay their debts.”

According to him, if Krobo Girls’ School has been able to settle their debt of GHC590, 000, other schools should be able to pay their debts as well.

“If school A has been able to pay why couldn’t school B pay. The PURC has gotten involved; all stakeholders have gotten involved too, so we are hoping for the best.”

This situation is the result of a nationwide disconnection exercise undertaken by the Ghana Water Company Limited following the indebtedness to their service provider.

“This is not just about the schools; but a lot of customers are indebted to the Ghana Water Company Limited.”

“Ghanaians need to help us so we can provide the quality of service for them.”

He added that although the current situation is unfortunate, the institution needs to be strengthened so that the proper services will be delivered.

“The non-payment of bills is seriously affecting our operations. But we are in discussion with the GES and the management of the schools .”
