Absentee MPs: Privileges committee’s work disappointing, says Mubarak

Speaking with Asaase News, Ras Mubarak said the committee must be swift in dealing with the four absentee MPs' issue to gain public trust

The former MP for Kumbungu, Ras Mubarak has said he is disappointed in the work of Parliament’s Privileges Committee regarding the case of the four absentee MPs.

The former lawmaker in March petitioned Parliament over the continuous absence of four lawmakers namely Sarah Adwoa Safo, MP for Dome-Kwabenya; Henry Quartey, MP for Ayawaso Central, Kennedy Agyapong (Assin Central) and Ebenezer Kojo Kum, MP for Ahanta West.

Speaking with Asaase News, Ras Mubarak said the committee must be swift in dealing with the issue to gain public trust.

“If a non-MP was found to have said or done something that requires for them to be brought before the privileges committee, I could bet that, that matter would have been treated with a lot of speed and alacrity,” Mubarak said.

“So, it gets a bit disappointing when it comes to members of Parliament. You don’t see that same speed and alacrity attached to dealing with these issues.”

“The more this drags, the more ridiculous of that process of having MPs come before the Privileges Committee for judgement to be passed on them, the public seems very disappointed,” he added.

Meanwhile, the embattled MP for Dome-Kwabenya, Adwoa Safo has been dropped from the Environment, Science and Technology Committee of Parliament and has been made a member of the Poverty Reduction Committee of the House.
