US Vice-President Kamala Harris arrives in Ghana today

The trip is aimed at building “stronger US ties with a continent that has seldom received the positive attention it deserves”

Vice-President Kamala Harris of the United States is heading to Ghana Sunday afternoon to begin a three-nation tour of Africa – her first official trip on the continent.

The trip is aimed at building “stronger US ties with a continent that has seldom received the positive attention it deserves”.

Harris is expected to meet with President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana, President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania and President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia before ending her tour on 2 April.

The reason for her visit is “to build on the progress made at the US-Africa Leaders’ Summit”, which was hosted by President Joe Biden and Vice-President Harris in Washington, DC in December 2022.

Discussions with each of the three presidents will involve African development challenges, bilateral relations and Russia’s war against Ukraine, among other issues.

Some of the people that Vice-President Harris will meet on this trip are young leaders and businesspeople and other individuals who are not in government.

Itinerary in Ghana

While in Ghana, Harris will visit a local recording studio in Accra to meet with young people in the creative industry. It is expected that she will give a major speech to an audience of young people on Tuesday (28 March 2023).

She will then visit Cape Coast Castle, tour the site and make remarks while she is there. It is expected that she will talk about “the brutality of slavery and the African diaspora”, a senior Biden administration official confirmed.

On Wednesday, still in Accra, she will meet with female entrepreneurs and discuss the economic empowerment of women. She will make an announcement there related to public and private sector investments in Africa that are aimed at helping to close the digital gender divide and empower women economically.

Vice-President Harris will leave Ghana on Wednesday afternoon (29 March) to proceed to Tanzania.
