NPP to 715 Northern MMDCE aspirants – avoid internal disaffection after president’s selection

The general secretary of the NPP moves to avert the impact of the internal disaffection likely to unfold after selection of 55 MMDCEs

The general secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, has completed a series of engagements with some 715 party supporters in the five Northern regions of the country aimed at averting the eventual disappointment and internal disaffection likely to unfold after President Akufo-Addo nominates just 55 of the the 715 to be metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives (MMDCEs).

John Boadu commenced the three-day working visit on Friday (21 May 2021) and completed his tour on Sunday (23 May 2021). The five regions he toured are the North East, Northern, Savannah, Upper East and Upper West.

In his engagements on all his stops, the NPP chief scribe noted that the rank and file of the party “cannot allow this process and the aftermath of it to derail the gains that have been made in uniting the party ahead of the 2024 general elections and beyond”.

“We all should be mindful of the ramifications and manage our expectations, understanding the principle that what unites us as a party must be greater and bigger than the sum of our individual ambitions, differences of birth, wealth, tribal and ethic affiliations,” said Boadu repeatedly during his stopovers.

He advised all the applicants at the various vetting/ interview centres he visited to remain committed to the party regardless of the outcome of their dreams and aspiration to lead their districts as the president’s representative in their respective metropolitan, municipal or district assemblies.

He said he was impressed with the quality of personnel who made themselves available to be considered. He expressed great delight in the kind of committed human resource pool these local representatives place at the disposal of the president at the metropolitan, municipal and district levels.

Upper East aspirants

In the Upper East Region alone, over 237 people applied to occupy only 15 MMDCE positions in the region. Of these 237 applicants, 15 are women. There are 23 candidates in Binduri (the highest number) but just seven aspirants in Nabdam (the fewest).

There is a different (and worrying) scenario in Garu District, where a family of father, son and mother all presented themselves to be considered as the district chief executive.

Savannah Region

The Savannah Region has 83 people listed for consideration, out of which four are women.

In the East Gonja municipal area, Salaga has 19 applicants (the highest number) while in West Gonja Municipal Assembly, Damongo has five candidates – the lowest number in the Savannah Region.

Upper West Region

The situation is no different in the Upper West, where 123 individuals have applied for MMDCE positions across the region. Out of this, 11 are women.

Wa Central and Wa West recorded 19 applicants each (the highest number) and Nandom registered one applicant only – the lowest number in the Upper West as well as in the entire five Northern regions.

Northern Region

The Northern Region alone has 208 applicants, ten of whom are women.

Binduri has 23 applicants (the highest number) while Nabdam has seven, the district with the fewest applicants in the whole of the Northern Region.

North East Region

The North East has on record 71 applicants, with six of them women.

East Mamprusi Municipal Assembly has attracted 18 applicants while West Mamprusi Municipal Assembly has six: the two municipalities with the highest and the lowest numbers of applicants respectively in the North East.
