Parliament to consider E-Levy bill next week

Alexander Afenyo-Markin says the finance committee has decided to amend the E-Levy rather than withdraw it totally from Parliament

The Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has stated that the Electronic Transaction bill, popularly known as E-Levy, will be reintroduced in Parliament for consideration next week.

He said the finance committee has decided to amend the E-Levy rather than withdraw it totally given the magnitude of the work done by the committee.

“Last week we said there was going to be a withdrawal and re-laying, Mr Speaker it has become prudent to look at an amendment considering the fact that the committee on finance has done quite a lot of work,” Afenyo-Markin said in Parliament.

“So the key issues…. especially the rate that Ghanaians were talking about, they need to bring it down, even at a point they wanted one percent, …except that they retreated to zero tolerance.

“So Mr Speaker, such an important amendment will have to be done on the floor at least to let Ghanaians know that in spite of all the difficulties, the government is a listening government. The government would have withdrawn it and not bring it at all but we all know the COVID-19 situation is having an effect on all governments around the world, and then we need revenue to fix two important sectors,” Afenyo-Markin said.
