Annoh-Dompreh to Alan: Call Hopeson Adorye to order

Hopeson Adorye, the operations director of the Alan campaign is under fire over his "irresponsible, denigrating, ethnocentric and illogical" statement to NPP members of northern extraction

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Nsawam Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has called on the Alan Kyerematen camp to run a “clean campaign” in the lead up to the election of a presidential candidate for the party.

Annoh-Dompreh’s admonition follows Saturday’s public comment by Hopeson Adorye, the operations director of the Alan campaign team, that the vice-presidential slot of the party is an automatic slot for the Northerners in the NPP while that of the presidential spot switches between the Danquah and Busia lineages.

“Whenever a Danquah leads the party, the Busia side steps aside but there is a Dombo (for running mate), and whenever a Busia lead, the Danquah side steps aside but there is a Dombo (for running mate). As for the Dombos they are always there (for running mate).

“If it went to Danquah, came to Busia, went back to Danquah, where should it go now, is it not Busia?” Adorye asked.

Unfortunate comment

In response, Annoh-Dompreh, who doubles as the Majority chief whip in Parliament said such comments bring division in the party.

“Chief Alan Kyerematen should as a matter of urgency call on his Director of operation, Hopeson to retract his unfortunate comment forthwith,” the MP tweeted on Sunday (14 August). “We have a beautiful party with a respected tradition, let’s conduct a civil and clean campaign.”

Adorye’s statement has been condemned by some party stalwarts including Musah Superior, a defeated general secretary aspirant of the NPP.

Derogatory remarks on northerners

“Adorye’s remarks is sending a certain dangerous message to the Ghanaian people of northern extraction that; we are nothing but second-class patriots. Our place in the national political space is to play second fiddle to flagbearers who must either be from the Danquah or the Busia sides of the three distinguished founding fathers of our great political tradition. This is most irresponsible, denigrating, ethnocentric and illogical. It is downright politically suicidal,” Superior said in a statement.

“I call on Mr. Adorye to retract his divisive, despicable and derogatory remarks on northerners and render an unqualified apology to all NPP members of northern extraction and to the party largely,” Superior added. “Similarly, l call on the campaign team of Honourable Alan Kyerematen to condemn and dissociate himself from this condescending remarks that only goes to weaken our party in the northern part of the country.”
