Team Ghana shines in Week 2 of African Games, arm wrestling takes centre stage

Ghana's arm wrestling team secures 41 medals to move Ghana to 6th on the overall medal table

Week two of the 13th African Games hosted by Ghana concluded on a triumphant note, with Team Ghana securing an impressive haul of 41 medals (8 gold, 19 silver, and 14 bronze). This stellar performance propelled the nation to sixth place on the overall medal count table, chasing after powerhouses like Egypt, Nigeria, and South Africa.

Week two kicked off with a strong showing in beach volleyball. Both the Men’s (Edward Ajanako & Paul Akan) and Women’s (Juliana Aryee & Charity Torku) teams impressed, reaching the quarterfinals before bowing out to Morocco and Mozambique, respectively.

While beach volleyball brought early joy, the chess team faced challenges, finishing in the lower ranks of both the Men’s, Women’s, and Mixed Rapid and Blitz competitions. Similarly, weightlifters Emmanuel Amo Boateng, Emmanuel Allotey, and others were unable to secure medals, despite aiming to build upon Winnifred Ntumi’s earlier success.

Emmanuel Lamptey and Joshua Ashitey brought a spark to Ghana’s wrestling team, reaching the Men’s Freestyle 86kg 1/4 Final and 74kg 1/8 Final, respectively. However, disappointment arose in cycling, with both Elite and U23 Men’s and Women’s teams failing to finish their races (DNF). Judoka Waheed Dodoo showcased promise, reaching the Men’s 100kg Round of 16 before losing to Angola’s Ismael Correia.

As the week neared its end, Ghana’s medal count remained at five. However, a remarkable turnaround occurred on 15 and 16 March at the Cedi Conference Centre. The nation’s arm wrestlers delivered a phenomenal performance, grabbing 41 medals (8 gold, 19 silver, and 14 bronze). Standout athletes included Edward Asamoah (double gold in Men’s 90kg), Blessed Abeka (double gold in Women’s 60kg), and Grace Minta (double gold in Women’s 80kg).

Mercy Pappoe, Ebenezer Osabutey, Foster Doevi, and Mark Ofosu competed in the Games’ triathlon event. While none reached the podium, Pappoe shone as the highest-ranked Ghanaian woman (17th) and Osabutey led the Men’s team (15th), finishing ahead of Doevi (16th). Unfortunately, Ofosu did not finish the race (DNF).

Team Ghana’s impressive results surpassed the expectations of Chef de Mission Ernest Danso, who, speaking on Asaase Radio’s Team Talk back in February, had cautiously stated, “I can’t mention numbers, but I’m sure they’ll be more than what we’ve had in the past. It should be more than even 30.”

With one week remaining in the Games, Ghana has a golden opportunity to further increase its medal tally and climb even higher on the leaderboard.
