Afrobarometer report: Ghanaians want to pay more in taxes

The survey also says a large majority (72%) are willing to pay more in taxes to help finance the country’s development from domestic resources

Almost 61% of Ghanaians do not know what taxes to pay, a new report by Pan African survey network Afrobarometer has said.

The survey which was released today 9 April 2021 also shows that 70% of the citizenry do not have any knowledge of how their taxes are utilised.

It says citizens are, however, more supportive of taxation if they believe the government is doing a good job of delivering basic services.

The report, however, says Ghanaians endorse taxation and are even willing to pay higher taxes to support the country’s development.

Many Ghanaians, according to the new survey, have also expressed mistrust of tax authorities and see widespread corruption among tax officials.

New Taxes

Government last month introduced new taxes in the 2021 Budget, including a sanitation and pollution levy, a gaming tax and a COVID-19 health levy to help shore up revenue.

The new taxes have since been greeted with mixed reactions, some arguing that it will bring untold hardship to ordinary Ghanaians.
