British politician Andy Burnham has intensified pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer after securing a decisive victory in the Makerfield by-election, a result widely seen as paving the way for a Labour Party leadership challenge.
Addressing jubilant supporters after his win, Burnham declared that Britain needed a new direction, promising to “lay out a new path for Britain” amid growing dissatisfaction with the Labour government. His victory returns him to Parliament and places him in a strategic position to challenge Starmer for the leadership of the ruling Labour Party.
The former Greater Manchester mayor said voters were demanding change, arguing that politics was no longer delivering for ordinary citizens. He pledged to focus on making life more affordable, rebuilding industry, and addressing concerns about economic inequality.
Burnham’s victory has fuelled speculation about a looming leadership contest within Labour, with several party figures reportedly questioning Starmer’s ability to reverse the party’s declining fortunes. The Makerfield result is being interpreted by many observers as a referendum on the Prime Minister’s leadership.
Despite mounting pressure, Starmer has signalled that he has no intention of stepping aside.
Speaking after the by-election result, the prime minister made clear that he would contest any attempt to remove him as Labour leader.
“Yes, I will run; I will stand,” Starmer said when asked whether he would participate in a leadership contest if one were triggered. He added that he had no plans to walk away from the role.
Political analysts say Burnham’s return to Westminster significantly alters the balance of power within Labour, as party rules require leadership contenders to be sitting members of Parliament. His victory therefore removes a major obstacle to a potential bid for the party’s top job.
The by-election result comes at a difficult time for Starmer, whose government has faced criticism over economic challenges and recent electoral setbacks.
Meanwhile, the Scottish Conservatives recorded their first Westminster by-election victory in half a century after capturing Aberdeen South, while the Scottish National Party retained Arbroath and Broughty Ferry, adding further intrigue to Britain’s shifting political landscape.
For now, Burnham has stopped short of formally announcing a leadership challenge. However, his emphatic victory and increasingly national rhetoric have convinced many within labour that the battle for the party’s future may have already begun.
