Lawrence Nana Asiamah Hanson, popularly known as BullGod, has launched the “Adopt-a-Cell” initiative, a campaign aimed at transforming conditions inside police holding cells across Ghana.
Dubbed Bright Walls, Better Minds, the campaign uses art, construction, and mental health interventions to improve the welfare of inmates who are awaiting trial.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Friday (13 February), BullGod recounted his personal experiences in police custody, saying, “The people in police custody… are in transition. Most of them are not convicts yet, and they suffer more than the convicts because once you’re convicted, you are transferred to the prison system. But these people are stuck in one spot, and it takes a toll on their mental and physical health.”
BullGod explained that the initiative seeks to bring dignity and hope to inmates through colorful murals, inspirational messages from the Bible and Quran, and improvements to basic infrastructure such as toilets, ventilation, and tiles.
He highlighted that the project is not just about aesthetics but about mental wellness, saying, “Once you have bright walls, definitely you have a better mind. A dark, dirty, hopeless environment doesn’t inspire reform—it hardens people.”
The project began at the Adabraka Police Station and will soon extend to the SWAT cell at Accra Regional Headquarters.
BullGOD revealed that support has come from individuals, businesses, and public figures, including Gomoa Central Member of Parliament Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus and local corporate sponsors.
He emphasised that the campaign also aims to provide legal support to inmates without representation, noting, “We have lawyers on board who are hoping to help with some of the cases so that people can come out. Most importantly, we’re hoping to catch the eye of this present administration.”
