Fire has razed parts of the district office of the Electoral Commission (EC) at Sapeiman in the Ga West Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.
The fire, which occurred on Friday dawn is believed to have engulfed a storage room for old electoral materials.
Friday’s inferno was detected by security men at the commission is said to have occurred around 2 am.
It is not yet clear what might have led to the inferno, which has destroyed several of the Commission’s properties.
Reports say it took officials from the Fire Service a while to douse the fire.
The Electoral Commission has however assured the fire outbreak will not affect data collected from the just ended voter registration exercise.
Greater Accra Regional Director of the EC Kwame Amoah gave the assurance in an interview with Asaase radio’s Caleb Ahinkwah.
“I was at home when I had a message from the security men on duty about the incident, So I asked them whether they have called the fire service which they responded in the affirmative,” he told Asaaseradio.
“When I got here around 4 am most of the document were but, this will not affect the latest data from the voter register” he added.
It is still not yet clear what might have led to the inferno which has destroyed several properties of the Commission.
But Mr Amoah is hopeful the Fire Service will come out with a detailed report on what caused the fire.
Meanwhile, officials of the Electricity Company of Ghana have been to the scene to reconnect the EC office to the national grid.
A statement from the Electoral Commission said items destroyed by the fire included old ballot boxes, used Form 1As/1cs, and referendum materials.
It said the fire did not affect the main administration block.
Investigations
The Accra Regional Police Command has begun an investigation into the cause of the fire.
The head of public affairs unit (PAU), deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Effia Tenge said the cause of the fire, as well as the value of the damage caused, were not immediately known.
DSP Tenge also added that there was no casualty.
Giving the facts, she said the Police Command received information about the fire outbreak at the Regional Office of the EC in the early hours of Friday.
She said four fire tenders from Amasaman, Kotoku, Nsawam, and Abelemkpe were brought in to quench the fire and provide security.
“Police officers from the division were also deployed to provide security for the fire officers,” she said.
